Since its foundation in 1899, HELLA has brought a wide range of innovative and high-tech solutions to the market, from the first acetylene lamps in 1908 and the first headlamps with asymmetric light distribution in 1957, through the historically first mass produced full LED headlamps in 2008 to Matrix headlamps, introduced in 2013.

The story of the development center in Mohelnice began in 1995. The first headlamps for Skoda Felicia originated here. And were followed by other, more complex products: tail lamps, halogen and xenon lamps, headlights with adaptive light level (AFS / ACOL) and in recent years premium full- LED headlights for Audi , Daimler BMW etc. are born in our design offices and laboratories.

Primary design, calculations, the construction of samples, verification and measuring in an optical laboratory. In modern lighting laboratories, teams of specialists design innovative optoelectronic systems for cars of prestigious brands, from conventional halogen solutions through xenon and bi-xenon modules to the application of the latest types of LED.


Sophisticated products will not work without bold solutions.


In the automotive industry, electronically controlled light sources offer bigger possibilities in the development of style, brand differentiation, highlighting the model and mainly increasing driving safety.

The electronics department in Mohelnice/Ostrava concentrates on developing control circuits of LED headlamps and rear lamps. In the simplest case, those are the PCBs with LED controlled by an external control unit. The discrete solution of constant current source or a DC/DC directly on the PCB is more complicated. We also develop or closely collaborate on the development of control units of the latest generation in light distribution systems (matrix beam , animated functions, laser... ), which can now be generally characterized as DC/DC multi-channel converters with 16/32bit microcontroller, CAN/LIN communications...


The construction of plastic parts has been one of our key competencies in the development of automotive lighting.


Whether it is the most modern headlamps, rear lamps, single function lamps or interior lighting. With the help of the most up-to-date CAD/CAM tools, the designs of the stylists are transformed into detailed numeric models, which are used for testing the conditions of real operation, critical load, the conditions during molding, the influence of temperature and climate.

Thanks to building the prototypes using the latest 3D printing technologies and continuous verification of the design, optimization can be flexibly proposed and can directly affect the final appearance of the cars that come on the market in a few years. And that is not at all everything.


That is a team of professionals that supplies headlamp prototypes. It ensures building the samples from the designs, through production (3D printing, tooling), polishing,


metal coating to the final assembly and testing. A fast growing group are the electronicians in the prototyping, who focus on the production of printed circuits, cables and special testers. The production flow is ensured by the technicians who order material.

and measured and, after optimizing the individual parts, a final testing must be performed according to the customer’s and international specifications and regulations.

Our laboratories have the latest equipment for the electronic, vibration, climatic, chemical and material testing including touch and optical 3D measurement and areas co-operate with HELLA laboratories worldwide in these areas.

Achieving the satisfactory test results is then "the green light" to begin serial production.

Development projects are unique as well as the teams that execute them. Project management coordinates the different roles in development teams, provides support to the extensive network of HELLA companies, manages the budget and oversees the project schedule.

The manufacturing process will not work without specialists who give shape to physical parts and ensure the transition of 3D data into real products.


The technical feasibility and manufacturability are, from the very beginning of the construction of our products, the basic parameter that influences the final appearance and functionality.

Precise injection press tools, the coordination of suppliers, tuning the first pieces, ramp up production - that is what we are dealing with here.

Custom assembly lines and fixtures

Self-sufficiency and flexibility, that is a brief description of the specific technical center department in Mohelnice.


Based on data and the information from the development team, assembly lines for Hella manufacturing plants worldwide originate here. Design engineers, electronicians, programmers and mechanics may apply their experience here. Thanks to the complexity of our work, there is something for virtually every technician.


The first full LED headlamp developed by Hella Mohelnice, where all the optical functions are provided by LED technology. The main optical functions are composed of projection modules, that is VarioLED PreField module and LED module. Various light distribution according to the requirements (motorway, city, countryside, etc. ) is ensured by the mechanical turning of a cylinder, which cuts the light output. The precise turning of the cylinder is ensured by using the CIPOS sensor.

Signal optical functions (day, outline and course change indicator) consist of 22 optical elements divided into 4 individual parts. The styling is dominated by one main frame, onto which partially transparent pieces of glass are welded. These ensure greater homogeneity from various viewing angles. Two decorative frames in the module area coated with “black chrome” give the headlamp a technical character.


What is the selection procedure?

Our selection process is usually divided into multiple rounds. In the first round there is interview with the future leaders about all aspects of the work. That's usually followed by another round where the candidates have a great chance to show their knowledge, skills and become familiar with the atmosphere in the team working environment, but also to recognize some of its members.
